Receiving enough academic credits gives a student the right to choose to live in an apartment, still on campus of course. With Lakeview apartments being somewhat difficult to sign up for, you might settle for Stadium View. Based on personal experience, here are some factors to consider when making your housing choice.
1. The Smell
When entering the apartment building, new noses might catch an unpleasant whiff. Stepping into a room, however, smells like my most hungry dog farted for a week straight. To help, place an air freshener or exercise dulling your sense of smell.
2. The Apartment Food Plan
Unlike the dorms, students who live in the apartments are not required to purchase a meal plan. Instead, students are automatically given 400 dining dollars. With these, students can purchase food from anywhere on campus. Students can still add a meal plan with the 400 dining dollars, but the meal plans still cost the same price when put on your tuition. I personally believe that the 400 dining dollars makes coordinating lunch or dinner with your friends a lot easier since you're not held back by the dining hall's hours.
3. The Distance
These apartments are in the far corner of the campus. When walking swiftly, arriving at Macintosh can take ten to fifteen minutes. Plan your daily schedule for not just class time arrangements, but for what you need to get done before making the walk back. For example, if I'd need to go to the Preforming Arts Center, then the Health Center, and finally the library, I would also need to make meal arrangements. Also, be mindful at what and how much you ship to the mail center. Unless you have a car, you'll need to carry that all the way back and don't expect the walk to take ten to fifteen minutes. And make sure you look both ways when crossing streets. When both cars and students on foot are in a hurry, it's important to be careful.
Now these three points are not to deter you from choosing an apartment. They are what stood out to me so far while living in an apartment for the first time. If you like getting some extra exercise, an apartment might suit you fine. I hope this helps you make a comfortable choice next year.

Hi, Kate! I enjoyed reading your blog!! I have never known those points of the apartment because I have even a longing for living in the apartment. I will be at ONU for only one year so I cannot live in the apartment but I can see that this apartment has many more positive aspects than negative aspects. I hope you will enjoy the apartment!!
ReplyDeleteThis provided some really good insight! Mystery smells are always unpleasant. One of the various personal downsides to living in an apartment complex is the challenges of living with others on your floor. Everyday could be something new or nothing at all. The flexibility of the meal plan is a unique plus that only the apartments get, I'm definitely jealous. I would recommend in terms of moving from one place to another to get either a bike or a skateboard. I like the ones with the baskets to allow easy transportation of items. Enjoy your apartment!
ReplyDeleteI loved all of your points in this blog! I wish I had the opportunity to live in an apartment my sophomore year! when moving into my apartment junior year I had some of my most memorable times in my college career. I miss apartment living the points were the best part!
